"On the Roof of the Rocky Mountains" celebrates the botanical legacy of internationally-acclaimed Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, the highest botanical garden in North America. The Gardens, also known as Vail’s Alpine Treasure, come to life in a delightful and intimate photographic tour of its unique plant collections. Illuminating text, accompanied by exquisitely detailed flower portraits, highlight the crystalline beauty of beloved alpine species. Perseverance in the face of climate change is a theme throughout the book, which features guest essays by internationally-recognized botanical experts and scientists.
Sarah Chase Shaw is a Basalt, Colorado-based writer who has authored two garden books: "Garden Legacy, The Residential Gardens of Design Workshop," and "New Gardens of the American West." Her book, "Living Beneath the Colorado Peaks: The Story of Knapp Ranch," received the 2018 National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum’s Wrangler award for Outstanding Art/Photography Book.
Todd Winslow Pierce is an award-winning professional landscape and conservation photographer based in Vail, Colorado. His images have appeared in numerous national and regional publications, advertisements, select marketing campaigns and fine art installations. His commercial and fine art assignments have taken him to locations throughout the US, Canada, Europe, Costa Rica and the Caribbean.
Nicola Ripley was born in the British Isles, where she discovered her love of alpine plants in the Scottish and Welsh mountains. Since 2011, she has served as the Gardens’ Executive Director. She travels widely giving talks, collecting seed, and studying alpine flora. She is a recipient of the 2017 Service Award from the American Public Gardens, and the 2016 Award of Merit from the North American Rock Garden Society.
