For over a decade Dr. Vera Dawson has authored the high altitude baking column published in the Vail Daily and Summit Daily newspapers. For many of those years, she also served as a chef instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge. In 2014 she published Cookies in the Clouds, a book of high altitude cookie recipes that was a Colorado Author’s League finalist for non-fiction writing and is now sold out. Baking Above It All, her second high-altitude baking book, was published in 2016 and is a favorite among mountain bakers. Her newest book, Cookies for People in High Places, was just released this month.
When she isn’t baking Vera can be found teaching Nordic skiing, hiking in both Colorado and Europe, and enjoying an active life with her husband and friends in Summit County.
Previously, Vera had a successful career as a public school administrator in both Jefferson County and Colorado Springs, Colorado, served as the Director of Educational Services at the Colorado Association of School Boards, and consulted nationally with public school districts.
She was a doctoral fellow at the University of Southern California, a master’s fellow at the George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and received an undergraduate degree from Goucher College in Towson, Maryland.
