Running the Rift (Hardcover)

KarinKarin says:  I couldn't put down this powerful coming-of-age story that follows Rwandan Jean Patrick. Jean Patrick is both a scholar and a gifted middle-distance runner - a likeable and real character.  His dreams of achieving Olympic glory seem assured, but he is Tutsi, and Rwanda's Hutu-Tutsi tensions are steadily increasing.  In the violent explosion of 1994 what happens to Jean Patrick and his family reflect the collective experience of Rwanda's 800,000-plus genocide victims.  Naomi Benaron renders friendships and families with tenderness and sincerity, and lingers on the goodwill of humankind even when they turn against each other.  This is Benaron's first novel, and she won the 2010 Bellweather Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction for this unfinching and beautifully crafted account of a nation and the survival of hope in unimaginable events.

Read this if you like The Kite Runner or What is the What.

To the End of the Land (Paperback)

By David Grossman

KarinKarin says: To the End of the Land is without question one of the most powerful and moving novels I have read.  The basis of the story is a mother who hikes the Israeli Trail to keep her son safe during his military service - if she is not home she will avoid the authorities notifying her of his death - but it puts the Isreal-Palistine conflict in a whole new light.  The strongest aspects of the book are the love-triangle between the three main characters, the precise depiction of the land, and how the author gets inside the heads' of his characters.  The story weaves between the 1967 war through the 1973 Egyptian war to the current conflict.  The reader is lead through the story of an extended family and all its vulnerabilities.  David Grossman is an award-winning author; he writes from first-hand knowledge and I got the feeling his writing is carthartic.  His true gift in this novel is how he forces the reader into another persons' skin.  A book I will not forget!

Good choice if you liked The English Patient or Atonement.

Nicole says: A story of two parallel lives, told by the two daughters who grow up in the same town with the same father. One knows the truth, but is intentionally hidden in plain sight by her parents. The other daughter, blissfully ignorant of her sisterly ties. I loved this novel, whose coming of age story is a mix between Jodi Picoult and Jayne Anne Phillips. A fast read and perfect for summer reading!

Lisa says: This is her most exciting novel yet. In this gorgeously written sequel to Shanghai Girls, sisters May and Pearl have kept a devastating secret from Pearl’s daughter Joy. When revealed, the nineteen year old daughter journeys alone from Los Angeles to Shanghai at the height of Mao’s Great Leap Forward in search of the truth, and to join China’s New Society. What does it mean to be a sister, a mother, a lover, a daughter, and a Chinese-American? Ms. See has wisdom to share via these beloved characters.

I'd Know You Anywhere (Hardcover)

By Laura Lippman
$25.99
ISBN-13: 9780061706554
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: William Morrow, 8/2010

Evie Rosen-Budd says: "I’d Know You Anywhere" is so powerful that I found it impossible to stop reading. It’s a psychological thriller, a story similar to those that often appear in the newspapers and on TV. And whether or not we knew the victims of kidnapping and death at the hands of a psychopath, we are always shocked and saddened. (In her own words, the author says this book was inspired by a true crime, but she doesn’t tell us more about the crime.)
The book is about the sole living victim of a serial killer. It’s not just a story about terror, but also a study of how one incident can alter the lives of many. It is a tremendous novel about fear, manipulation and survival. Get ready for an intense emotional journey that delves into issues any one of us can face at any time. Laura Lippman addresses these issues with perception and understanding.

Ernest, the Moose Who Doesn't Fit (Hardcover)

Sandy says: With more moose on the loose in our Valley, it's appropriate to feature a picture book starring an exceptionally LARGE moose, name of Ernest.  For Ernest, life is good--except that he can't fit into his favorite new book, the one about himself.  He's way too big...but he doesn't give up easily.  Inspired by the ingenuity of his best friend, a SMALL chipmunk, the two collaborate (in earnest) on a successul scheme...and kids will love the surprise ending.  Whimsical illustrations, imaginative text and format...perfect for sharing.
