SPILLED INK is a published collection of art, poetry and prose by Battle Mountain High School students.

The public is welcome to join students, parents, faculty and staff to celebrate the 2012 publication of SPILLED INK. The evening will feature art, music, poetry and prose.

Students will be selling the publication and raising funds with the sale of baked goods.

“Too Princessy!” by Jean Reidy

It’s a rainy day, but not a single toy in the toy box seems fun enough for our adventuresome little girl. She tries everything from trucks to telescopes, puzzles to pianos, but nothing does the trick until she lets her creative sparks fly. In the spirit of the first two charmers, Too Purpley! and Too Pickley!, Reidy’s sprightly text is again beautifully illustrated with Leloup’s stylish art. Preschoolers will love to see and say all the games and toys the little girl tries, and adults will appreciate the celebration of imagination that is the best solution of all.

“Buried in the Sky: The Extraordinary Story of the Sherpa Climbers on K2's Deadliest Day” by Amanda Padoan

The author will be joined by special guests Eric Meyer and Chhiring Dorje.

Buried in the Sky explores the intersecting lives of Chhiring Dorje Sherpa and Pasang Lama, following them from their villages high in the Himalaya to the slums of Kathmandu, across the glaciers of Pakistan to K2 Base Camp. When disaster strikes in the Death Zone, Chhiring finds Pasang stranded on an ice wall, without an axe, waiting to die. The harrowing rescue that follows has become the stuff of mountaineering legend.

EXCERPT FROM BURIED IN THE SKY

Hanging off the face of a cliff, an ice axe the only thing between him and death, a Sherpa climber named Chhiring Dorje swung to the left. A massive ice boulder ripped off above, hurtling toward him.

It was the size of a refrigerator.

The underbelly caught, and the mass flipped, cartwheeling down. It tore past, skimming Chhiring’s shoulder, then vanished.

Brooof. It slammed into something below, shattering.

The mountain shook with the impact. Powder shot up in a column.

It was near midnight on August 1, 2008. Chhiring had only a hazy idea of where he was: on or near the Bottleneck of K2, the deadliest stretch of the most dangerous mountain.

Amanda Padoan is a mountaineer and alpine historian. She studied literature at Harvard University and law at Pepperdine School of Law. Amanda writes for Explorersweb and is a contributor to Rock and Ice and The Alpinist. She is a Yaddo Fellow.

Tickets for the Books in Bloom Author Event are on sale now! Visit the website at www.booksinbloom.cvlsites.org for tickets, and plan to join the Eagle Valley Library District for an afternoon with authors Erin Blakemore, Jennifer Haigh, and Tatjana Soli. Each author will discuss her work individually. There will be hors d’ouevres during the event, a cash bar, books available for purchase courtesy of The Bookworm of Edwards, and a book signing at the conclusion of the author presentations.
