Vail Symposium Hot Topics -- Adnan Husain

Thursday, July 10 at 6 p.m., at the Sonnenalp Resort
From the Danish Cartoon controversy to protest over the Pope's Regensburg speech, the position of Muslims in the West is increasingly represented as a problem, a challenge to liberal democracy. While fears of "Eurabia" combine anti-immigrant sentiment with outright hostility to Islam, complicated debates rage about how to accommodate differences—debates including the veil in France and the Archbishop of Canterbury's support for incorporating shari'ah into common law. Adnan Husain, Associate Professor of Islam and History at Queen's University in Canada, will argue that the debate needs to be understood in a longer history of the multicultural Mediterranean. Re-imagining history, he suggests, will be crucial to a common global future.
