Life and Love in the Russian wilderness Friday, April 25th, at 6 p.m.
Presented by the Gore Range Natural Science School
Drawn to Russia to work on conserving its extensive wilderness, Laura Williams shares the story of this life-altering move in her memoir The Storks' Nest. Working as a conservationist in a remote outpost in the Bryansk Forest, Laura falls in love with the station's director and her future husband Igor Shpilenok. Together they explore the massive Russian wilderness, encountering rare and endangered animals, apprehending poachers, and becoming surrogate parents for a baby moose. The Storks' Nest is one woman's remarkable adventure through a place virtually unchanged by time and technology, finding love and helping save the environment along the way. Laura will read from her book, field questions, and offer a slide presentation of her life in the little village of Chukhrai, population 19.
